Auriclus could have floated up the tower as a mist, but it was a matter of no moment for Nim Wei to climb. Her fingers discovered crevices no man could see, nor cling to even if he found them. For her, the ascent was a mild exertion, a bit of excitement before her rest.
She enjoyed turning the tables on her little spy. Knowledge was power, as the sages said.
And who could resist following someone who left a trail this wide? Really, the girl was in desperate need of her guidance. Feeding from rats and fowl. Pah. Nim Wei grimaced with distaste as she reached for another handhold. Her year-old fledglings could do better. Human blood was the drink of rulers. Humans existed to make upyr strong.
Or so Nim Wei liked to think. It might have been true – assuming the powers that made the races cared who had the upper hand.
With a last contraction of her well-warmed muscles, Nim Wei sprang soundlessly onto the window ledge. The opening was narrow, but deep and high enough for her to stand within it. A simple folding shutter closed off the space. Nim Wei did not have to open it. She simply peered through the center slit.
If the sight of the curtained bed was uninformative, the two twined forms she sensed inside were not. One of the souls was mortal. The other was her prey. Emotion wafted in the air even as they slept, the hopes and fears of newfound lovers.
So, she thought, Father's pup has taken a mate. Nim Wei wondered if the girl knew just how staunchly her human meant to protect her, imagining he could face "her people" down. But his presence would make Nim Wei's conquest more of a challenge. Better the girl had been friendless.
She shrugged to herself, content for now to have the situation be what it was. A path would be revealed – to endear herself to the girl, to put her in her debt.
Nim Wei knew how to wait, especially when she did it on her own terms.
